Stryper's Yellow-and-Black Attack Proves Timeless at House of Blues Houston

Stryper's live performance proves that four decades into their career, the world's premier Christian heavy metal band remains as relevant and loud as ever. Checking them out for the first time live at House of Blues Houston on July 18, we found the show was far more dynamic than expected. It was awesome to see just how loyal and multi-generational their fanbase is after 40 plus years. Far from a mere nostalgia act, their performance bridges the gap by delivering their '80s classics like "Calling on You" alongside the once scandalous “To Hell with the Devil.” Proving their current endeavors don't stray far from their roots, they included a powerful track from their latest studio album, Throne of Thorns, which is available for preorder on their website.

Musically, the band is incredibly tight, but that's no surprise with the lineup including 3 of the 4 original members. Frontman Michael Sweet still hits his famous, soaring high notes effortlessly, sounding just as crisp and solid as he did on the original records. Right beside him, guitarist Oz Fox locks in, showing off a seamless chemistry and precision that only comes from sharing a stage for decades. Bassist Perry Richardson, who joined in 2017, holds down the low end while nailing Stryper's signature backing vocal harmonies. Meanwhile, Robert Sweet commands the stage from his famous sideways drum kit, giving fans an awesome view of his hair flying non-stop from the opening song to the final encore. This spectacle alone might be worth the ticket.

Stryper continues their legendary tradition of tossing pocket-sized Bibles into the audience. After several unsuccessful attempts from other band members, drummer Robert Sweet stepped out from behind his massive kit to personally launch copies up to the balcony to ensure the upper levels weren't left out. The crowd roared when the band shared a story about some of those throws resulting in hitting fans in the head and causing them to bleed. Sweet commented “it wasn't funny” … but it was.

Pausing between songs to talk about how much he missed the '80s, Sweet confessed to the crowd that he still feels 18 inside. It was a nostalgic sentiment that clearly struck a chord. Looking around the venue, nearly everyone was nodding in agreement. Clearly the fans from this era feeling exactly the same.

The band is keeping a packed touring schedule all year, which they plan to wrap up on The '80s Cruise sailing out of New Orleans this coming February 2027. Between the massive vocals and those synchronized twin-guitar leads, Stryper proved in Houston that they are just as formidable today as they were in 1986.
